Lord Shiva — Hindu scriptures describe Shiva as the Supreme Being without beginning or end, and also as the form of Rudra who emerged from the fiery wrath of Brahma. The word Shiva means auspiciousness. He bestows blessings upon all beings who worship him. He has the authority to destroy karma and guide souls toward liberation (moksha). He is the ocean of grace who grants happiness in both this world and the next, fulfilling the wishes of devotees.
He is compassionate and grants boons freely without discrimination between devas and asuras. Even the smallest act of devotion satisfies him. That is why Lord Shiva is lovingly called Bholenath — the innocent, easily pleased one.
According to the Vedas and Puranas, the five elements (Pancha Bhootas) and time itself are under his control. Therefore, water — one of the five elements — and the power to control it belong to Lord Shiva. When Brahma granted Bhagiratha the boon of bringing the celestial Ganga to Earth, he explained that only Lord Shiva had the power to bear her force, and advised Bhagiratha to pray to him.
Bhagiratha then began intense penance to please Mahadeva. After a year of severe austerity, the compassionate Lord appeared before him. Bhagiratha prayed that the celestial Ganga be received in Shiva’s matted locks. Pleased by his pure intention, Shiva granted his request.
When Bhagiratha prayed to Ganga to descend, she flowed down toward Shiva. Like a vast ocean wave, Shiva spread his long matted hair and received the celestial Ganga. As she fell upon his head, he caught her within his locks and held her there. Because he bore Ganga on his head, Shiva came to be known as Gangadhara — the bearer of the Ganga.
From Shiva’s matted locks, the celestial Ganga emerged in seven streams:
- Toward the east as Hladini (Brahmaputra), Pavani, and Nalini
- Toward the west as Vaksu, Sita, and Sindhu
- The seventh stream flowed southward as Ganga
The southern stream followed Bhagiratha. It flowed down to the netherworld and touched the ashes of Bhagiratha’s ancestors, freeing them from the curse. All 60,000 of them attained heaven. Since the river followed Bhagiratha, she also came to be known as Bhagirathi.
Bhagiratha’s determination, perseverance, faith, and relentless effort are remembered as Bhagiratha Prayatna — an expression used even today to describe tireless effort toward achieving a noble goal.
The place where Ganga first touched Earth is the sacred Gangotri. From there, she flows through holy places such as Devprayag, Haridwar, Varanasi, Prayagraj, and Gangasagar, before merging into the Bay of Bengal.
The waters of the Ganga are believed to cleanse sins and lead souls toward liberation. The Ganga flows primarily through five Indian states — Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal. She forms India’s largest river basin and the world’s most densely populated river basin, supporting about 600 million people. Countless living beings depend on her for survival.
However, the Ganga is increasingly polluted due to human waste, industrial discharge, and waste from religious practices. This pollution threatens both people and the countless species that depend on her. It is the responsibility of each one of us to protect the sacred Ganga from pollution.
To keep the Earth prosperous, we must preserve Mother Ganga, who descended from the heavens to nourish the land. When visiting sacred places along her banks, we should act responsibly — avoiding pollution, not littering, and respecting nature. This would be our way of expressing gratitude to Bhagiratha, who brought the Ganga to Earth.
I conclude this narrative with a prayer that Mother Ganga’s blessings be bestowed abundantly upon all who have read this story.
With gratitude,
Shanmugapriya K Sambathkumar
